Mold Damage Restoration Removal, Cleanup and Rebuild
WHAT IS MOLD? A quick explanation
Mold is a multicelled organism in the fungi family. The spores themselves are so small that they can only be seen with a microscope. Individually, they float in air looking for new, favorable conditions to grow. Together, they grow and multiply in 'colonies'. The colonies are generally visible with a "fuzzy" or "hairy" appearance that ranges in shades such as gray, blue, green or black most frequently. Molds require oxygen and high levels of water or moisture in order to thrive. Drier environments retard the viability of mold growth. The organisms ingest organic materials for fuel resulting in the decomposition of the materials they come into contact with in the process. This is a natural and necessary process that occurs all around us. You see it in nature as fall leaves turn back into soil or the decomposition of organic trash in a compost bin.
But, given its destructive nature, it's not always friendly. Different strains of mold or the quantity of exposure can be detrimental to the health of you and other living creatures. When it develops indoors, it colonizes in a more contained, and thus concentrated, environment. This raised concentration and more constant exposure is what elevates its ability to negatively affect you.
While some molds have been able to be utilized in beneficial way (such as penicillin) they also produce a chemical called "Mycotoxins". No one knows exactly why this byproduct is a result in mold growth, but it does inhibit its host ability to combat it. This is a large factor of mold's ability to adapt, thrive and grow in living human and animal hosts. The impact and severity of any mycotoxin varies with the strain and existing health conditions of the body exposed. Although everyone is "allergic" to mold, those with existing respiratory issues, the immunocompromised, those afflicted with certain other medical conditions and the elderly and/or young are at a higher risk of adverse reaction to exposure.
